When we speak of being balanced on the spiritual path, we are ultimately speaking of ourselves being balanced as opposed to our life circumstances being in balance. What we do and the result of our experiences in the outside world is only ever truly a reflection of how we are within our own internal experience. The spiritual path is ultimately about connecting and deeply awakening to the source of all existence as us and with that which is all around us connected to us, as opposed to how we can modify existence to how we want it. The first is of primary importance whereas the second is a secondary matter, because without a true awakened connection to source, we have no real trans-formative power to influence the external world in a deep and meaningful way.
So what we have in the external situations of life does not necessarily determine how balanced we are within our own internal experience. For instance, we can see that there are people in the world who seem to have the most perfect of outside circumstances, yet how they are within themselves may still be lacking balance. They have all the money, friends and popularity, but yet they don’t have themselves. Have you noticed this?
Through the old societal conditioning many of us perceive that balance comes to us when we have the right circumstances in life, like relationships, work, money, play and so on. But this is not entirely so, in my experience i have come to see that trying to get the external situations of life to be a certain way in balance (as we define it) is often only a cover up to make us feel better within, often only pitching over the root of our own imbalanced internal state. In other words, we often look to get things outside of us the way we want them so that we can feel a certain way internally.
If all of a sudden you got everything you ever wanted, most people would undoubtedly feel happy,…for awhile, but then after some time this happiness may begin to decline as the initial euphoria wears off and things become normalized. You would feel very balanced having everything you wanted, but then it would begin to dissipate and you would be left looking for the next thing that will make you happy and give you a sense of balance. Does this sound like a familiar pattern?
If we looking at life closely, we would undoubtedly come to see that life is in a constant state of flux and change. Life is like a swinging pendulum of events, one minute something is one way and in the next instant it can be completely different. One minute you have all the money in the world and in the next you could be bankrupt, healthy one minute and sick the next. For things to be balanced in the outside world and within our body and minds, they need to be constantly attended to. You cut the grass on the lawn and get it just how you want it, and then in a few months the grass is long and needs tending to again. You lose weight and get fit and healthy, and then you stop doing what you did and soon enough the body more or less goes back to how it was before. Life just will not stand still.
So in the world of the physical which includes life circumstances, relations and your own mind and body, one must tend to those things and do the ‘right things‘ in order to keep them balanced and in harmony, and because life is constantly changing and always shifting, this requires constant care and attention to keep all of these elements within balance. It has often been said that life is made up of the five elements, those being water, earth, air, fire and ether or space. These elements reside in all physical life including at the bodily level. If we keep these elements in order through how we act, what we eat and drink and the activities we engage in, we can keep the elements within us in balance, but i emphasis that this is a constant maintenance that requires much effort to do so. Why?
Because the elements are always on the move switching, change and readjusting.
Maybe you have noticed within your own experience, that yourself at sometime or another have really felt balanced and happy, maybe this was due to having your external life just the way you want it, the right job, relationships, money and health ect, and that things seemed to be running smoothly for you and on course? Or maybe for those consciously on the spiritual path practicing meditation and inner alchemy work, that you have felt happy and balanced for a period of time, but then it seems to leave you and you move back into feeling imbalanced and unhappy again? Does this sound a familiar pattern?
For the latter, you may have been feeling really peaceful and even blissful, and then all of a sudden you wake up one day and feel dreadful and unpleasant, and so you strive to try and get back to how you were feeling previously?
For the prior, you may have had everything in your life running smoothly as you wanted it, and then one day something breaks down, like a relationship that is no longer harmonious, or you get laid off at work, or you or a family member becomes sick?
This universe we are experiencing is always on the move, and if we wish for things to be the way we want them, then we must attend to all elements in order to do so. But even though we may try to get everything in our life just the way we want it, sometimes our efforts are just not enough, and nature comes along and does what it does regardless of our plans. This is where the art of letting go and surrender comes in. There is our business, other peoples business and natures business, we cannot ultimately control the whole of nature or anyone else. Anyone involved in a natural disaster of some sort and was lucky enough to survive could tell you as much. If we just stick to what we can control and let go of the rest, we will move in life in a more harmonious and peaceful way.
Beyond Physical Balance
So as we have spoken about above, there is a type of physical balancing of the five elements and life circumstances that requires effort and the ability to juggle and maintain many things. Anyone that strives for physical balance will no doubt have fallen in and out of balance many times (what they define it to mean to be in balance), and will know that ultimately it is pretty much a futile effort to be balanced internally and externally all of the time.
This is where the deeper sense of spiritual balance comes in and makes life a whole lot easier and more effortless. Our spiritual essence and source is ultimately in the subtle nonphysical realm, it is that which is beyond and not subject to the happenings and changing of the physical world. The very essence of what you are and what resides at the source of all beings is an unchanging unaffected presence that gave birth and rise to all physical forms, some call this God or God consciousness.
It is the pure Spirit that is not to be confused with the soul, the soul is the energy body that came from spirit to incarnate within the body, and the soul is also subject to form and can be affected by the physical level, but that which gave birth to the soul, and which we truly are, the Spirit, is beyond all physical change. It is free and totally unbounded, it is unlimited and pure and is the one in you that is aware of all that is being experienced while at the same time is unaffected by what happens in this world of change and form. Maybe you have noticed or become aware of this essence which is timeless, formless and is not subject to change. Have you become aware of the one constant within your experience, that has always been with you through all experiences and has not changed even though many things on the surface have? This is the Spirit.
As we become established and grounded in the awareness of this unchanging spirit, that is beyond thought and beyond the body itself, we begin to automatically meet all changing experiences with the heart of the unchanging awareness that we truly are. And so we begin to be able to roll with all the punches of life so to speak, when something internally or externally appears to move out of balance, we meet it with the quality of our unchanging awareness and are able to integrate it and allow it to align back with life again. In other words, just by meeting everything with our unchanging awareness and noticing it without judgement or struggle, we allow those unbalanced physical elements to be invited in our meeting of them and in doing so the physical elements begin to realign themselves and come back into balance without having to use force or effort to do so. The nonphysical essence that we are has an automatic aligning effect on the body/mind organism, and realigns and readjusts it bringing it into balance once more.
How do we do this then?
Relax to Align
When we speak of relaxation here, we are not speaking of just the relaxation of the body, we are speaking also about the relaxation of the mind and thought process. Many people seek to relax the body, they take time out to physically do very little, but many people whilst doing this do not relax the mind and still continue to ‘think’ even though they are not doing anything. Thinking requires a lot of energy, especially if the majority of thoughts are stressful and worrying ones, in fact, even some positive or excitable thoughts can also be draining, as excitement can have a similar sapping effect as anxiety for instance.
What happens if you just completely let go?
When you truly let go… the mind and body totally relax, and you move back into the essence of your being which is beyond the level of the body and mind and beyond what has been termed the ‘masculine‘ and ‘feminine‘ qualities. The inner and outer, the right and left, the ying and yang , and the intellectual and instinctive. As this happens, you firmly and consciously put yourself in the position of the unchanging awareness, and the body and mind begins to come into alignment with that. In other words, when you relax the body and mind by letting go, the body and mind begin to come into harmony and align with the Spirit. It is the trinity, male , female and beyond both. Mind, body and spirit in total harmonious alignment and balance as one, this is liberation.
You see, it is the nonphysical realm that truly affects and influences the physical realm, God consciousness or pure consciousness is the driving and creative force behind everything, without it nothing can be in existence or can come into existence. So only when we align with our true nature of spirit can we create a true and real alchemical change to occur on the level of matter and mind. Put simply, for true balance to occur within us, there has to be a connection established in the nonphysical realm. Each time we feel out of balance, the most effortless way to move back into to balance and peace is to let go and quit struggling, fighting or trying to change everything, as struggling and trying to change things only leads to more unrest and therefore more imbalance within us.
So the Secret to internal balance therefore…is to relax and let go. When we relax it is there, when we relax we come into harmony and move effortlessly, and when we relax we align and begin to vibrate with the whole universe, totally connected and expansive. When we relax the mind and body we disengage from their activity and allow ourselves to move more greatly into the unchanging awareness that is always present. This is when true peacefulness arises as our very nature. The easiest way to come into balance is not to try and make an effort to balance, but to relax and allow inner balance to happen naturally.
Just let go, get out of your own way and allow inner balance to occur naturally. Then you may also find as a byproduct…that outside circumstances begin to arrange themselves in a more balanced way also. Balance is simple when we relax…
